FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t the middle finger an offensive gesture?

Traditionally, yes. That is exactly why the idea exists. One Finger for Earth aims to turn something strongly associated with negativity into something positive.

Are you telling people to give others the middle finger?

No. The most important rule of the movement is that the gesture is not aimed at another person.

Not at someone. For something.

Why is the palm facing forward?

The palm-forward gesture visually separates One Finger for Earth from the conventional way the middle finger is directed at another person.

Why Earth instead of Planet?

Earth feels close and personal. It is not an abstract object in space. It is our home: its nature, soil, water, air and living systems.

Is this a climate movement?

Climate can be part of it, but One Finger for Earth is broader. It can stand for nature, biodiversity, clean water, clean air, less waste, responsible consumption and many other ways of caring for Earth.

Is One Finger for Earth political?

The movement is not affiliated with a political party. People with different political views can still choose to care for each other and for Earth.

Is the gesture directed at polluters, governments or companies?

No. The movement is deliberately built around being for something rather than against someone.

What can I raise mine for?

Anything positive connected to caring for Earth: oceans, forests, wildlife, clean streets, less waste, future generations, your local environment or another reason meaningful to you.

Can organisations take part?

Yes, provided the core principle is respected: the gesture is raised for something positive and is not aimed at a person or opponent.

Can I use the One Finger for Earth logo?

Usage guidelines and downloadable brand assets will be published on the Brand Assets page.
